Novak Djokovic

About

Born in Belgrade and shaped by Jelena Genčić's group of teenage talents during the Yugoslav wars, Novak Djokovic turned pro in 2003 and won his first Grand Slam at the 2008 Australian Open. The all-time leader in men's Grand Slam titles (24), weeks at world No. 1 (428+) and ATP year-end No. 1 finishes (8), Djokovic has redefined the longevity ceiling in the sport. The Olympic gold in Paris 2024 completed the only major prize that had eluded him.

How they play

Playing style

The most complete defensive baseliner the sport has produced. Reads the ball off opponents' strings unusually early, redirects pace down the line on both wings, and turns defence into offence with a neutralising backhand cross-court. Flexibility and recovery from sliding splits remain elite, even into his late 30s.

Serve
First-serve placement and kick are the strengths; raw power has dipped slightly since 2023 but break-point save rate is still tour-leading.
Groundstrokes
The two-handed backhand is the gold standard for the era — flat, deep, hit on the rise.
Movement
Even at 38, his lateral coverage and ability to split-step into wide returns is unmatched.
Weakness
Slow surfaces and long rallies have become more taxing physically; deep fields can wear him down across two weeks.
