How they play

Playing style

Marta Kostyuk plays an aggressive, high-risk "killshot" style, constantly seeking to dictate points with powerful groundstrokes and net approaches. Her explosive movement and reflexes enable excellent court coverage and volleying, making her dangerous from all positions. She generates heavy topspin forehands for depth and employs an inside-out backhand swing for pace, though her game demands precision to avoid errors in extended rallies.

Serve
Kostyuk's serve features a fluid arm action with effective pronation for power and spin, winning 73.7% of first-serve points YTD 2026 at 60.3% first-serve accuracy. Her second serve is a relative weakness, winning only 47.4% with frequent double faults averaging 0.49 per game.
Groundstrokes
Her forehand uses a semi-western/eastern hybrid grip with high elbow finish for heavy topspin, depth, and control as a primary weapon. The two-handed backhand features bent arms at contact, unit turn, and inside-out swing for power and stability.
Movement
Exceptional footwork, speed, agility, and reflexes allow explosive lateral movement and full-court coverage, supporting her defensive retrieval and quick positioning for offense. She performs well across surfaces but has shown recent clay success.
Weakness
Mental lapses in concentration and focus lead to unforced errors and poor shot selection in long rallies; option paralysis causes inconsistent aggression. Weaker second serve and double faults are exploitable, particularly against top returners.
