How they play

Playing style

Ben Shelton is an aggressive left-handed power player whose massive serve, often exceeding 140 mph, dominates points early. He leverages a heavy forehand with spin and depth to dictate from the baseline, transitioning effectively to the net. His tactical identity revolves around first-strike tennis, shortening rallies with pace and lefty angles, making him dangerous against top returners despite occasional defensive lapses.

Serve
Shelton possesses one of the tour's biggest serves, regularly hitting over 140 mph with precise placement, including a tricky lefty slice. He generates explosive power through deep knee bend, leg drive, and shoulder-over-shoulder rotation, winning over 95% of service games at peaks.
Groundstrokes
Dominant forehand loaded with topspin and depth serves as his primary weapon, producing winners from anywhere. Backhand is flatter with less consistency, prone to errors under pressure, but improving in rally tolerance.
Movement
Relies on elite straight-line speed and athleticism for court coverage rather than sliding, effective on faster surfaces but less so on clay. Strong defender when stretched, prefers hard courts.
Weakness
Limited sliding ability hampers lateral movement on clay, allowing opponents to extend rallies. Backhand on the run lacks depth, often resulting in slices or errors when pulled wide.
