How in-play tennis pricing works
A pre-match price is a forecast. An in-play price is arithmetic. Once a match starts, the book knows the score, who is serving and how many points have gone, and it recalculates the win probability after every point.
Hold of serve is what drives it. On a fast surface where both players hold comfortably, a single break is close to decisive and the price moves violently the moment it happens. On slow clay where breaks are traded, the same break barely moves the market. That difference is why the same 4-3 scoreline can carry two very different prices on two surfaces.
Momentum is priced too, and it is priced badly by some books. A player who has just saved three break points is usually shorter than the score alone justifies, because models weight recent points. That is where the gap between books opens up.
What to watch for
- Suspensions. The market closes while a point is live. A bet struck as the serve goes up is normally voided, not accepted at the old price.
- Stream delay. Every stream runs behind the live score. If you are betting point to point, the book knows the outcome before your picture shows it.
- Retirements. Books differ on whether an in-play bet stands when a player retires. Some void, some settle on the player who advances. Check the rule before the match, not after.
- Price gaps. Two books can be several points apart on the same live match. That gap is the whole reason to compare rather than to bet wherever the account already has money in it.
